Join. The stocking will be knit in the round.
Begin by working *K1 P1; repeat from * to the end of the round. Repeat until your work measures 4” in length.
Switch to the main color.
K all for until you work, including the cuff, measures 12” in length.
Heel:
Explanation of wrp-t:
The heel is done using the wrap and turn (wrp-t) short heel method.
If wrap and turn is new to you, this video by Knitting Freedom is an excellent introduction to the wrap and turn method. Click HERE to watch.
Wrap and turn on knit side (right side): Slide the next stitch on the left needle to the right needle (insert the needle into the stitch purlwise). Bring the yarn to the front of your work, slide the stitch back from the right needle to the left needle. Bring the yarn to the back of the work. This completes the wrap. Turn your work.
Wrap and turn on purl side (wrong side): Slide the next stitch on the left needle to the right needle (insert the needle into the stitch purlwise). Bring the yarn to the back of your work, slide the stitch back from the right needle to the left needle and bring the yarn to the front of the work. This completes the wrap. Turn your work.
The heel is worked with the next 21 stitches only. Place the other 21 stitches on a separate needle or stitch holder. You won’t be working with these stitches until the heel is finished.
Switch to contrast color. Do not cut the main color yarn.
Row 1: (right side of work) – Knit all until you have 1 stitch left on the needle, wrp-t. Turn.
Row 2: (wrong side of work) – Purl all until you have 1 stitch left on the needle, wrp-t. Turn.
Row 3: Knit to 1 stitch before the wrapped stitch, wrp-t. Turn.
Row 4: Purl to 1 stitch before the wrapped stitch, wrp-t. Turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 9 stitched unwrapped in the middle. You will end on a completed purl row.
Short Heel Increase:
Row 1 (right side): Knit to the first wrapped stitch. Lift the wrap stitch onto the needle. Knit the wrap and stitch together. wrp-t the next stitch. Turn.
Row 2 (wrong side): Purl to the first wrapped stitch. Lift the wrap stitch onto the needle. Purl the wrap and stitch together. wrp-t the next stitch. Turn.
Row 3: Knit to the first double wrapped stitch. Lift the double wrap stitches onto the needle. Knit both wraps and the stitch together. wrp-t the next stitch. Turn.
Row 4: Purl to the first double wrapped stitch. Lift the double wrap stitches onto the needle. Purl both wraps and the stitch together. wrp-t the next stitch. Turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all wrapped stitches have been worked and you’ve worked all the way across the heel. The heel is now complete.
Foot:
Move all stitches back onto the circular needle. Begin working where the main color was put to the side to complete the heel. Continue using the main color.
K all until the main color rows worked after the heel measures 5” in length.
Toe:
Continue working on the circular needles until the stitches are too tight to fit around. At this point, divide the remaining stitches evenly on the double pointed needles and continue.
Switch to contrast color.
Row 1: K all.
Row 2: K all.
Row 3: *K4 K2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round. (35 stitches remaining)
Row 4: K all.
Row 5: K all.
Row 6: *K3 K2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round. (28 stitches remaining)
Row 7: K all.
Row 8: K all.
Row 9: *K2 K2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round. (21 stitches remaining)
Row 10: K all.
Row 11: K all.
Row 12: *K1 K2tog; repeat from * to the end of the round. (14 stitches remaining)
Cut the yarn and weave through remaining stitches. Insert the tail of yarn into the center of the stitches and pull to close up the end. Secure the tail on the inside and weave in the end. Weave in all other ends.
Loop:
Make a loop at the top to hang the stocking. This can be done several ways, including an I-cord, a chain or attaching a 3 strand loop as shown in the photo.
To make the tie as shown on the stocking:
- Cut 3 pieces of yarn approximately 12” long.
- Line up the 3 strands together and twist them several times. When you bring the top and bottom ends together they will form a nice spiral twist. Tighten more if needed.
- Tie all 6 ends together in one knot, leaving enough of a gap at the top to hang the stocking.
- Attach the ends onto the inside of the stocking cuff. Weave in 2 strands into the inside of the stocking and then knot those strands together part way down the cuff so it is not visible on the outside. Repeat for the other 4 strands.
